The average Shopify store converts between 1.7% and 2.7% of sessions into orders, depending on the dataset: the median Shopify store sits at 1.74%, the mean at 2.61%, and ecommerce-wide averages run 1.97% to 2.72%. Industry changes everything: health and wellness stores convert at a 3.31% median while sports and outdoors stores sit at 1.24%. The full breakdown by industry is below, checked October 20, 2026.

The Overall Shopify Conversion Rate, From Three Datasets
No single number is "the" average, because every dataset measures a different population. Three current ones worth anchoring to:
- Shopify stores specifically: a Shogun analysis of 745 Shopify stores from January to June 2026 found a mean conversion rate of 2.61% and a median of 1.74%, with the top quartile starting at 3.39%, per Blend Commerce's benchmarks roundup.
- Ecommerce-wide, live trading data: IRP Commerce's market data shows 1.97% across all markets for September 2026, up from 1.68% a year earlier.
- Global multi-platform: Dynamic Yield's rolling 12-month benchmark sits at 2.72%, per the same Blend Commerce roundup.
The median and the mean tell different stories, and the median is the honest one for self-assessment: a minority of very strong stores pulls the mean up. If your store converts at 1.8%, you are above the typical Shopify store, even though you are "below average."

The pattern is consistent across datasets: consumable, repeat-purchase, lower-consideration categories convert high, and considered, high-ticket, fit-dependent categories convert low. IRP Commerce's September 2026 trading data tells the same story with different sector cuts: arts and crafts leads at 5.76%, health and wellbeing runs 2.83%, fashion 1.62%, and baby and child trails at 0.44%. A food brand at 2.2% is underperforming its category; a sports equipment brand at 2.2% is beating the top quartile. Your industry median is the number to measure against, not the all-store average.
Why the Spread Is Nearly Three to One
A health supplement converting at 3.31% is not better run than a kayak store at 1.24%. Four structural forces set each category's ceiling:
Price and consideration. A $30 consumable is an impulse decision; a $1,500 piece of equipment is a research project spread across visits. High-ticket categories convert each visit less often by design, which is also why their sessions-to-order windows run longer.
Purchase frequency. Food, beauty, and wellness stores earn repeat buyers who land and reorder in two minutes, and those sessions convert at many times the cold-traffic rate. Categories bought once every few years never build that cushion.
Fit and quality risk. Apparel's 1.69% median is a hesitation number: will it fit, how does the fabric move, what does it look like on a real body. The same applies to furniture scale and equipment durability. Risk the page cannot answer becomes an abandoned session.
Traffic mix. Categories that live on viral social discovery pull in huge volumes of low-intent browsers, which depresses the rate even when absolute orders grow. A falling conversion rate on sharply rising traffic is often success, not failure.
The practical read: the first two forces are structural and not worth fighting. The second two are addressable on the page, which is where the gap between a category's median and its top quartile, often a full doubling, actually lives.
The Rest of the Funnel: Add to Cart, Abandonment, Devices
Conversion rate compresses the whole funnel into one number, so the intermediate benchmarks matter for diagnosis:
Add to cart. The product-page add-to-cart rate averages 6.08% globally, per Dynamic Yield's rolling benchmark, with beauty highest at 9.56% and luxury lowest at 1.76%. If shoppers add but do not buy, your problem is downstream; if they do not add, it is the product page.
Cart abandonment. 77.55% of created carts do not become purchases in Dynamic Yield's data, and Baymard Institute's long-running average puts documented cart abandonment at roughly 70% across studies. Abandonment is normal; recovery flows are where the margin hides.
Devices. In Dynamic Yield's global data, mobile now converts at 2.88% against desktop's 2.37%. Shopify-specific studies have historically shown the reverse, so check your own split before assuming either: a store whose mobile conversion badly trails desktop has a mobile experience problem the averages will not fix.
What Video Engagement Does to These Numbers
One pattern the public benchmarks do not capture: the gap between shoppers who engage with video content and those who do not. We build Moast, a Shopify-native shoppable video UGC app, so weigh that as you read, and here is what our network data shows across 6,080 active Shopify stores from August 6 to October 19, 2026:
- Shoppers tapped play on 21.1% of the occasions a video widget was shown.
- Sessions where a shopper engaged with video produced 14.3% of all completed checkouts network-wide, a share far above video's footprint on the page.
- Tagged shoppable video drove roughly $1,286 in influenced and direct revenue per 1,000 video views.
- About 1.5% of video views produced a product tag tap, the moment a watching session becomes a shopping one, across more than 50 million tracked sessions.
The mechanism is the same one driving the industry table above: categories convert low when shoppers hesitate over fit, quality, or scale, and video is the format that answers exactly those doubts. That is why the documented lifts cluster in considered categories: Cradlewise lifted conversion 17% with real customer content on a high-consideration product, and ENDU moved from 307,000 to 345,000 euros monthly on identical traffic in apparel, the industry sitting at a 1.69% median. The full dataset is in our 25 video commerce statistics, and the question of causation is handled in does shoppable video actually increase conversions.

Benchmarks Move: Seasonality and the Calendar
Every number above is a snapshot, and the snapshots move. IRP's all-market rate climbed from 1.68% in September 2025 to 1.97% in September 2026, a 17% improvement in a year, and within any year the calendar swings harder than that: November and December run hot on purchase intent, January runs cold on returns and browsing, and a promotional event can double a store's rate for a weekend.
Two rules keep that from misleading you. Compare like months against like months, so this October against last October rather than against July. And never benchmark your store against industry numbers gathered in a different season: holding a Black Friday conversion rate as the new baseline is the fastest route to a demoralizing Q1. The dates matter enough that this page states its own: all figures were checked on October 20, 2026, against datasets whose windows are named inline.
How to Benchmark Your Own Store Correctly
Compute it the same way the benchmark does. Orders divided by sessions, over the same window. Shopify's analytics reports this as "online store conversion rate"; comparing your order-per-visitor number against a session-based benchmark flatters you.
Compare against your industry median, not the global mean. The spread between health and wellness at 3.31% and sports at 1.24% is nearly a factor of three. The all-store average is trivia; the category median is a target.
Segment before you panic. A blended rate hides the diagnosis. Split by device, by traffic source, and by new versus returning. A store with strong returning-customer conversion and weak cold-traffic conversion has an acquisition quality problem, not a site problem.
Watch the trend over the tier. Industry medians move with seasons and the economy, which is why IRP's all-market number moved from 1.68% to 1.97% in a year. Your own month-over-month trend on consistent traffic is the cleanest signal you control.
What Actually Moves the Number
The benchmarks tell you where you stand; closing the gap is a product page job. The levers with documented results, in rough order of effort:
Social proof where the decision happens. Reviews, ratings, and customer video on the product page, covered in our complete guide to Shopify social proof.
Shoppable customer video above the reviews. The placement discipline behind the Dame and Cradlewise results; the full playbook is in how to increase Shopify conversion rate with video and increasing PDP revenue with shoppable video.
Recovery flows. With cart abandonment above 70%, abandoned-cart and browse-abandonment emails work on the largest pool of near-buyers you have.
Speed and friction. Slow pages and surprise costs remain the boring, persistent killers; fix them before anything clever.
Whatever you change, measure it at the page level rather than the store level: record the baseline on the pages you touch, change one thing, and compare the same window after. Store-level averages dilute every signal while a rollout is partial. The measurement framework, including how to put a dollar figure on the lift, is in our guide to calculating the ROI of shoppable video.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average conversion rate for a Shopify store?
The median Shopify store converts 1.74% of sessions and the mean is 2.61%, per Shogun's analysis of 745 Shopify stores from January to June 2026. Ecommerce-wide, IRP Commerce measured 1.97% across all markets in September 2026. Anything above roughly 3.4% puts a Shopify store in the top quartile.
What is a good conversion rate on Shopify?
Above your industry's median. As of the January to June 2026 Shopify data, that means beating 3.31% in health and wellness, 3.16% in beauty, 1.69% in apparel, and 1.24% in sports and outdoors. A store beating its category median on consistent traffic is doing well regardless of the all-store average.
Which industry has the highest ecommerce conversion rate?
In Shopify-specific data, health and wellness leads at a 3.31% median, followed by beauty and personal care at 3.16% and food and beverage at 2.99%. In IRP Commerce's September 2026 trading data, arts and crafts leads at 5.76%. Consumable, repeat-purchase categories dominate the top of every dataset.
Is 2% a good conversion rate for Shopify?
For most industries, yes: 2% beats the 1.74% median Shopify store and sits above the category medians for apparel, home and garden, electronics, autos, and sports. In health and wellness, beauty, or food and beverage, 2% is below the category median and signals room on the product page.
Why is my Shopify conversion rate below average?
Check three things before touching the site: whether you are comparing against your industry median rather than the global mean, whether a traffic mix shift (new paid traffic converts far below returning visitors) is dragging the blend, and whether mobile is far below desktop. Only after those checks is it a site problem, and the product page is the usual culprit.
How do I increase my Shopify conversion rate?
Work the product page first: social proof, customer video with product tags, complete answers to fit and quality doubts, fast load times, and no surprise costs at checkout. Then add recovery flows for the roughly 70% of carts that abandon. Documented results from this playbook include a 17% conversion lift at Cradlewise and 38,000 euros in added monthly revenue at ENDU on unchanged traffic.
How often should I re-check conversion rate benchmarks?
Twice a year is enough for the industry tables, since the medians move slowly outside of economic shocks. Your own store deserves monthly review against like months from the prior year. The sources on this page refresh on their own schedules: IRP Commerce publishes monthly, and the Shopify-specific studies typically update annually.
